Begin with four clues: spot size, pattern inside the spot, whether fruit is marked, and where symptoms started. Build a useful photo record
Photograph the entire plant, the lowest affected leaf, both leaf surfaces, the stem, and green and ripe fruit. Add a ruler. Note when symptoms appeared, recent rain or overhead irrigation, and whether nearby potatoes, peppers, or tomatoes are affected.
If temperature injury is plausible, compare recent lows and highs with the separate tomato temperature guide. Cold injury can produce tan or gray blotches, while heat and water stress can cause curling without an infectious leaf spot.
Take shared low-risk steps
Remove the most affected lower leaves when plants are dry, but do not strip more than about one-third of the foliage. Bag or dispose of tissue according to local guidance when a serious pathogen is suspected. Clean pruners between plants.
Water at the base and avoid splashing leaves. Mulch bare soil to reduce soil splash, stake or cage plants for airflow, and space plants appropriately. University of Minnesota Extension explains that many tomato leaf-spot organisms first reach lower leaves from soil or debris and that dry foliage slows new infection.
Get confirmation before a pesticide
If spots spread rapidly, reach fruit or stems, or do not fit the comparison, contact a local Extension office or plant clinic. A diagnostician may need a sample with both healthy and affected tissue. Keep it cool and follow the clinic's packaging rules.
A fungicide does not control a bacterial disease, mite feeding, or temperature injury. Products generally protect new tissue rather than restore dead areas. If local guidance recommends a pesticide, the current label must list tomato, the target problem, and the way you intend to use it. Observe the preharvest interval and all pollinator, temperature, and protective-equipment precautions.
Plan next season from a confirmed result
At season's end, record the diagnosis, bed, cultivar, onset date, and severity in your garden journal. Remove crop debris as local guidance recommends, rotate crop families when space allows, and choose resistance based on the disease that was actually confirmed.
