Why Didn't My Seeds Germinate? A No-Growth Troubleshooting Test

Do not restart the whole tray immediately. Wait through the packet's expected germination window, then open one representative cell or a short section of row. A firm, unchanged seed points toward dormancy or unsuitable conditions; a swollen but stalled seed suggests temperature, oxygen, or moisture trouble; a soft, dark, or missing seed points toward decay, pests, or physical loss.
Compare several cells before drawing a conclusion. One failed seed is normal variation; the pattern across varieties and locations is the stronger clue.

University of New Hampshire Extension explains that viable seed still needs water, oxygen, a suitable temperature, and sometimes light. Water-saturated media can reduce oxygen enough to slow or inhibit germination.
Measure instead of touching the room thermostat
The air temperature across the room is not necessarily the temperature inside the seed cell. Use a clean probe thermometer in the growing medium at seed depth, checking early morning and later in the day. Compare the result with the packet or crop-specific Extension guidance.

Check water and depth without drowning the next batch
The mix should be evenly moist during germination, not glossy, compacted, or standing in water. Make sure every container has drainage. If the surface dried into a crust outdoors, a small seed may not have been able to emerge even though moisture remained below.
Confirm planting depth against the packet. Some seeds need light and should not be deeply covered; others need close contact with moist mix. If you used garden soil in indoor cells, replace it with a clean seed-starting medium rather than sterilizing soil in a kitchen appliance.
Decide whether the seed itself needs testing
If one stored packet is the outlier and conditions were appropriate, run a household germination check before spending more tray space. For newly purchased seed, keep the packet and lot information. If a properly run check suggests a quality issue, contact the seller with the crop, lot, storage history, test conditions, seed count, and photographs.
Recognize damping-off risk
Seed that decays before emergence and seedlings that collapse at a thin, water-soaked stem can be associated with damping off. University of Minnesota Extension links greater risk with cool, wet conditions, low light, excess salts, and contaminated materials. Discard badly affected material, clean reusable equipment, use fresh mix, improve drainage and airflow, and avoid overfertilizing.
Change one factor in the replacement sowing and label it. That turns a frustrating empty cell into an experiment you can learn from, rather than another identical retry.
