Is My Tomato Plant Nutrient Deficient? Read the New and Old Leaves

Look first at where symptoms begin. Uniform yellowing of older leaves plus slow, pale growth can suggest nitrogen shortage. Purple, slow seedlings can suggest phosphorus stress. Yellow young leaves with greener veins can suggest iron is unavailable. Yellowing between veins and scorched margins on older leaves can point toward potassium or magnesium—but water, root injury, pH, disease, and mites can create similar patterns.
Use visual clues to choose a test, not a bag of fertilizer. A soil, container-media, or plant-tissue analysis is much more reliable than diagnosing one photograph in isolation.
Map the symptom on the plant

Rule out the root-zone problem
Check moisture below the surface. Saturated soil excludes oxygen and can leave a plant wilted and yellow even when nutrients are present. A dry root ball, damaged stem, compacted bed, root-knot galls, or a container packed with circling roots can also limit uptake.
Review recent weather. Our tomato temperature guide explains how cool conditions slow warm-season plants. A temporary purple cast on a cold-stressed seedling is not enough evidence for a phosphorus application.
Next, inspect leaf undersides with a hand lens and compare any distinct lesions with the tomato leaf-spot guide. If nearby plants share a sudden symptom, consider irrigation, spray drift, or weather exposure.
Choose the appropriate test
For an in-ground bed, use a laboratory that serves your state and provides vegetable recommendations. Sample according to its depth and mixing instructions, and tell the lab the crop and any amendments already applied. A pH result matters because a nutrient can be present but less available to roots.
For a container, a garden-soil test may not interpret a soilless mix correctly. Contact the mix maker or an Extension lab about media testing. For a large or valuable planting, a diagnostician may recommend paired soil and tissue samples. Follow its instructions for leaf age, number, timing, and shipping; random leaves from the compost bucket are not a valid sample.
Correct only the confirmed need
If testing confirms a shortage, follow the laboratory recommendation and fertilizer label. Measure the application and water as directed. Avoid repeated “just in case” feeding: excess salts can injure roots, and too much nitrogen can push leafy growth at the expense of balanced fruiting.
UC Cooperative Extension Ventura County notes that well-growing tomato vines can shed shaded lower leaves normally. It describes whole-plant pale growth and small fruit, together with older-leaf yellowing, as a more useful nitrogen-deficiency pattern than one old leaf alone.
Photograph the plant before correction and again after a consistent interval. Track new growth rather than expecting damaged tissue to turn perfect. If symptoms spread despite appropriate root conditions and a test-based correction, submit the plant for diagnosis.
The useful question is not “Which deficiency photo looks closest?” It is “Which evidence will separate nutrition from the other causes in this garden?”
